“The Princess Bride 2”: Will This Legendary Sequel Ever Happen?
Table Of Contents
For decades, The Princess Bride has remained one of the most beloved films of all time. Its witty dialogue, memorable characters, and timeless charm have cemented its place in cinematic history. The 1987 classic was officially recognized in 2016 when it was added to the National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Fans continue to quote lines like “Never start a land war in Asia”, “Have fun storming the castle”, and “My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die”. But despite its legendary status, a long-awaited sequel has never materialized. The question remains—will The Princess Bride 2 ever happen?
A Cult Classic That Grew Over Time
Originally based on William Goldman’s novel of the same name, The Princess Bride was meant to be part of a larger story. While the film was only a moderate success upon its release, it became a cult phenomenon in the home video era. With an exceptional cast featuring Cary Elwes (Westley), Robin Wright (Buttercup), Mandy Patinkin (Inigo Montoya), Andre the Giant (Fezzik), Billy Crystal (Miracle Max), and more, the film’s legacy has only strengthened with time.
Given Hollywood’s tendency to reboot, remake, and sequelize beloved classics, it’s surprising that The Princess Bride 2 has never been made. In fact, there was a time when it almost happened.

The Lost Sequel: Buttercup’s Baby
Before his passing in 2018, William Goldman was working on a follow-up novel titled Buttercup’s Baby. The story would have followed Westley and Buttercup as they attempted to rescue their kidnapped son from a sinister villain with no skin on his face. Though revised editions of The Princess Bride included a bonus chapter from this unfinished sequel, the full novel never came to fruition.
Goldman had expressed hopes that the book would be completed by the film’s 50th anniversary in 2023. However, since he held the rights to The Princess Bride in both print and film, his estate would need to approve any continuation—and they have shown no interest in doing so.
The Cast Stands Firm: “Please Don’t Ruin It”
Even if the rights issues were resolved, the original cast has been vocal about their opposition to a sequel or reboot. In a 2017 interview with E! News, Robin Wright shared that there was brief discussion about revisiting The Princess Bride, but she and others quickly dismissed the idea, fearing it could diminish the magic of the original. “We thought, ‘Don’t ruin it. Please don’t ruin it.’”
Her co-star Cary Elwes has echoed this sentiment on multiple occasions, firmly stating, “There’s no reboot.” Years ago, he even took to Twitter to paraphrase one of the film’s famous quotes, making it clear that a sequel would be inconceivable.
Hollywood’s Interest vs. Fan Resistance
The Princess Bride is a classic movie with fighting, fencing, true love, giants, revenge, pirates (well, one), and more! A tale beloved by many! But would a sequel capture modern-day audiences and leave no survivors? Join Chris Stiles, Ian Klink, and their guests as they work miracles to create their pitches.
Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra once hinted at the possibility of a sequel, proving that Hollywood is aware of the franchise’s enduring popularity. However, without a second novel to adapt and with the cast unwilling to return, the likelihood of The Princess Bride 2 remains slim.
That hasn’t stopped fans from attempting their own remakes. One of the most notable efforts came from a group of celebrities—including Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas—who participated in a homemade recreation of the film for the now-defunct streaming service Quibi. While the project was playful and fun, it only reinforced how untouchable the original remains.
The Verdict: Will We Ever See The Princess Bride 2?
As much as fans would love to revisit Florin, the odds of a proper sequel ever happening are close to zero. Without William Goldman to guide the story, the original cast’s blessing, or a compelling reason beyond nostalgia, The Princess Bride 2 seems destined to remain a fantasy.
Perhaps that’s for the best. Some stories are so perfectly told that they don’t need a second chapter. As Westley himself might say, “As you wish.”
