The Brave and United Monkeys Fighting Crocodiles
Crocodiles are known as the kings of the swamp due to their dominance in shallow waters, instilling fear in most animals that have to confront them. However, crocodiles are not always successful in overpowering their prey.
A video captured by a tourist showcased a scene where a troop of brave and united monkeys fought against and emerged victorious in a battle for survival against crocodiles, their deadliest adversaries, in the Kwando Ecological Reserve in South Africa.
The video begins with the sight of a desperate monkey struggling in the midst of a river. Its hind leg is trapped in the jaws of a crocodile. On the shore, a group of at least ten monkeys stand attentively, observing every move.
It seemed that the unfortunate monkey would meet its demise at the hands of the “king of the swamp.” However, with extraordinary effort and relentless determination, it gradually made its way towards the safety of the shore, hoping for the intervention of its fellow monkeys.
Not failing to meet the expectations, the troop immediately sprang into action. They relentlessly attacked the crocodile, inflicting bites and creating pressure, while simultaneously pulling the trapped monkey away from the perilous area.
Faced with an overwhelming number of monkeys, the crocodile realized it couldn’t withstand the confrontation and retreated back into the water.
Many comments regarding the video suggested that the monkey was incredibly fortunate to receive assistance from its kind. Without it, it would have most likely fallen victim to its adversary. Crocodiles are the number one threat to water-dwelling creatures.
According to National Geographic, crocodiles have one of the strongest bite forces among animals on Earth, second only to great white sharks.
Among them, saltwater crocodiles possess the most formidable bite, measuring at around 3,700 pounds per square inch (PSI), which is equivalent to approximately 16,460 Newtons. This figure is 3.5 times greater than a lion’s bite force and 25 times greater than a human’s. The bite force of a great white shark is 4,000 PSI.
With such bite force, crocodiles can easily crush bones and flesh, leaving their victims severely injured and unable to escape.
Typically, after delivering a powerful snap, crocodiles drag their prey underwater, suffocating them. Then, to tear apart their meal, they clamp down on the flesh and perform a series of rotational movements.
With this strategy, they can overpower large prey such as cattle, buffalo, sharks, and even humans in an instant. As for medium-sized prey like monkeys, antelopes, and zebras, they hardly stand a chance of survival when faced with crocodiles.
The unity and courage displayed by the troop of monkeys in fighting off the crocodile is a testament to the resilience and collaborative nature of animals when faced with adversity. It serves as a reminder that strength in numbers and unwavering determination can lead to triumph even against the most formidable opponents.
