Surprised, The elderly woman has more than 230 great-grandchildren and first met.
The family tree of Maydell Taylor Hawkins boasts an extraordinary legacy, spanning six generations and encompassing an impressive number of descendants. As the family matriarch approaches her 99th birthday, she recently had the joyous opportunity to meet her great-great-great-great-granddaughter, solidifying the strong bonds that have been cultivated over the years.
Maydell, a resilient Kentucky lady, has overcome numerous challenges throughout her life to build the family she cherishes today. At the tender age of 16, she married her husband Bill, who was 50 years old and a widower with ten children. Tragically, Bill’s first wife passed away during childbirth, leaving Maydell to assume the role of a mother at a remarkably young age.
In addition to caring for her stepchildren, Maydell and Bill went on to have 13 children of their own. Their life together was not easy, as Bill often traveled for work and their living conditions were far from ideal. They faced economic hardships, lacking basic amenities like running water or a washing machine. Nonetheless, Maydell wholeheartedly embraced her role as a dedicated homemaker, raising her large brood under challenging circumstances. Despite the scarcity of resources, she ensured her children never went hungry or lacked clothing, providing for their needs with resilience and resourcefulness. Growing and preserving their own food became a way of life for Maydell and her family.
With an ever-growing family, Maydell rose to the occasion, starting her days early in the morning to tend to various chores. From stocking the stove with wood to collecting eggs, catching chickens, and preparing breakfast before her children headed off to school, she demonstrated unwavering commitment and determination.
Now, according to the family tree meticulously crafted by her sister-in-law, Janice Taylor, Maydell’s descendants number an astounding 623 individuals. The family chart highlights 106 grandchildren, 222 great-grandchildren, 234 great-great-great-grandchildren, and 37 great-great-great-great-grandchildren. Recently, the family gathered at the nursing home to celebrate the meeting of the oldest and youngest members of their extended family. This rare occasion allowed the great-great-great-granddaughter to meet Maydell, fostering a sense of unity and representing the power of the female lineage within the family.
Gracie, Maydell’s daughter, fondly recalls the gathering, explaining, “We planned a day and we all met. Grandma knew we were coming, and she was excited. We had three precious hours with her.” As the family continues to grow, Maydell looks forward to celebrating her 99th birthday on July 19, 2023. If everything goes according to plan, she eagerly anticipates meeting her third great-great-great-great-grandson this summer, with the hope of capturing yet another cherished photograph together.
