Will Scarlett Johansson Return as the Superpowered ‘Mutant’ in Lucy 2?

Lucy 2 is currently in development by director Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp, sparking excitement among fans of the 2014 action-packed sci-fi film. Scarlett Johansson, now one of the top action stars in Hollywood, gained widespread recognition not only for her roles in Marvel blockbusters but also in smaller-budget projects like Lucy. Despite the film’s modest $40 million budget, Johansson’s performance helped turn Lucy into a massive hit, grossing over $458.9 million worldwide.

The Science Behind Lucy While the claim that “humans only use 10% of their brains” has been debunked by real science, it made for a compelling premise in an action-thriller. Luc Besson successfully drew audiences into his vision, and now, he aims to deepen this narrative with a sequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), Lucy 2 has not been officially announced, but during the CineEurope International Film Exhibition in France, EuropaCorp listed the sequel as a project currently “in development.”

The Story of Lucy The original film followed Lucy, a young woman who unintentionally becomes involved with a criminal organization and is forced to absorb CPH4—a hormone naturally produced in pregnant women. The substance unlocks her brain’s full potential, transforming her into a superpowered being with telekinesis, mind-reading abilities, bullet-dodging reflexes, time manipulation, and extraordinary combat skills.

Luc Besson’s Initial Resistance to a Sequel Despite Lucy’s impressive box office performance, Luc Besson initially dismissed the idea of a sequel. In an August 2014 interview, he stated, “I don’t see a direction for a sequel. Right now, I have no ideas for Lucy 2. Maybe if I find a great concept, I’ll consider it, but at this moment, I’m not even thinking about it.” However, it seems Besson may have changed his mind, as recent developments hint at an evolving interest in continuing the story.

Challenges in Making Lucy 2 Bringing Lucy 2 to life presents significant challenges. Firstly, surpassing the success of the original film will be no easy feat. Additionally, Lucy’s character seemingly transcended physical form by the end of the first movie, raising questions about how she would return—perhaps only as a mysterious voice, similar to the AI in Her (2013). Another crucial factor is whether Scarlett Johansson is willing to reprise her role. If Lucy 2 leans into a more abstract or philosophical direction, akin to Spike Jonze’s Her, will audiences still be invested?

When Can Fans Expect Lucy 2? If Luc Besson is indeed preparing to move forward with Lucy 2, fans will be eager to know the timeline for its release. With production details still scarce, speculation remains high about whether Scarlett Johansson will officially return and how the story will evolve beyond its mind-bending conclusion.

As anticipation builds, one thing is certain: if Lucy 2 does happen, it has the potential to be another groundbreaking sci-fi spectacle.
