Exciting news! The world’s largest mechanical transport is set to restart.
The Antonov firm has announced that engineering work has begun on rebuilding the second Antonov An-225 freight jet, also known as Mriya, with an 88-meter wingspan. The aircraft was previously destroyed during the Russian-Ukrainian war. The rebuilding process is estimated to cost at least $500 million, although the final cost may be significantly higher. The Ukroboronprom, the parent corporation of Antonov, initially predicted that the repair work would take more than five years and cost more than $3 billion.
Approximately 30% of the original aircraft’s parts that were destroyed during the war can be repurposed to construct new aircraft after a comprehensive analysis, according to the Antonov firm. Billionaire Richard Branson’s Virgin Airways is expected to provide financing for the project, as per the prior press release from the business. Dmytro Kuleba, the foreign minister of Ukraine, has also expressed support for the proposal to rebuild the aircraft model.
The An-225 was initially built to transport the Buran space shuttle and its components for the Energiya rocket. The reusable aerospace transport system (MAKS), which uses a tiny space shuttle with a tank and a plane as its first stage, is expected to use the An-225 as its launch pad. The aircraft has 32 landing gear, six engines, and a 640-ton cargo capacity. It can transport massive objects up to 200 tons in the body or exceptionally large loads up to 250 tons in the inner compartment.
In conclusion, the rebuilding of the Antonov An-225 freight jet is a significant undertaking that has the potential to advance the aerospace industry. The use of original parts from the destroyed aircraft highlights the aircraft’s durability and reinforces the importance of sustainable manufacturing practices. The An-225’s capacity to transport massive loads is critical for the success of future space missions, making this project crucial for the aviation industry’s growth.
