Buffalo rams the lion into the air to save you, does this effort pay off?
The saying goes, “Once brothers, always brothers.” It means that when you become brothers with someone, you are always brothers, no matter what. This applies not only to humans but also to the animal kingdom.
As pack hunters, lions mainly prey on medium to large-sized mammals such as impalas, zebras, and buffaloes. Like a small society, the wild world has its own order and is established by the strongest hunters. These are the most fearsome predators in nature and are ranked at the top of the food chain by scientists.
However, there are exceptions. When prey animals unite and show compassion for each other, their bond creates an unbeatable strength, capable of creating epic upsets in the wild.
Ian Matheson, 52, and his son were on a camping trip in the Mjejane Game Reserve in Kruger National Park, South Africa, when they witnessed an incredible story of unity among African buffaloes.
It all started with a pair of lions attacking a stray buffalo. The lions pounced on the poor animal with all their might, leaving it with no chance of escape. Just when things were looking bleak for the buffalo, fate smiled on it.
Realizing that their friend was in mortal danger, two other buffaloes rushed in to the rescue. At that moment, the lions were no longer the fearsome hunters they once were in the eyes of the buffaloes. Friendship had turned the buffalo into a brave and powerful animal. It charged at the lions, using its sharp horns to knock one of them airborne. Not content with one attack, the buffalo charged at the lion again, sending it tumbling to the ground.
The wounded lion was quick to learn its lesson and realized it had picked the wrong target. After the buffalo’s fierce attack, the lion retreated into the nearby bushes, tail between its legs, and ran for its life.
In reality, African buffaloes are not easy prey. They are one of the five largest land animals in Africa, with an adult weight of between 500 kg and 1,000 kg.
According to statistics, African buffaloes kill about 200 people each year. Even the most skilled hunters have learned to respect this animal’s power and ferocity.
The story of the African buffaloes teaches us that unity is strength. When we stand together, we are unbeatable. Whether in the wild or in our daily lives, we can achieve great things by supporting and caring for each other. Once brothers, always brothers.
