In a remarkable medical feat, two conjoined twins, Elizabeth and Mary, from Cameroon, have been successfully separated after a challenging 27-hour surgical procedure. On August 12th, 2023, a team of dedicated healthcare professionals at Acibadem Healthcare, a private hospital in Turkey, accomplished this extraordinary separation, marking a significant milestone in the field of pediatric surgery.
The journey of Elizabeth and Mary began in July 2020 when they were born conjoined at the hips, sharing not only physical proximity but also crucial systems such as the spinal cord, digestive system, and neurovascular framework. From a young age, the twins faced unique medical challenges due to their conjoined condition.
When Elizabeth and Mary were just six months old, their parents sought medical assistance at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in Turkey. There, they were met by a multi-specialty team of sixty healthcare professionals, led by expert specialists in urology, radiology, physical medicine, intensive care, rehabilitation, and cardiovascular surgery. The collaboration among these skilled professionals was essential to planning and executing the intricate separation procedure.
Prior to the surgery, meticulous planning was carried out, sparing no effort to ensure the twins’ safety and well-being. The medical team even collaborated with the bio-design team at Acibadem University to create a three-dimensional dummy model of the conjoined twins. This model allowed for thorough preoperative assessments, enabling the medical team to anticipate and address potential challenges during the surgery.
The parents of Elizabeth and Mary expressed their overwhelming joy and gratitude for the successful procedure. They shared, “We were on cloud nine when we saw them wiggle around in their own beds in their own rooms.
