2023 Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II Goes Heavy On The Details
The Rolls-Royce Phantom has been updated, but the changes are subtle and will be heavily influenced by the buyer’s personal preferences.
The current Rolls-Royce flagship sedan debuted in 2017 as a 2018 model. The Series II, the updated version, is set to go on sale later this year as the 2023 model.
The only exterior changes are a new grille with a new accent line running across the top and a lighting system to make the grille pop at night. Buyers can also select a shade chrome pack, which darkens the grille and other exterior accents.
Small laser-cut bezels surround the headlight, resembling distant stars when illuminated. It complements the popular Starlight headliners found in many modern Rolls-Royces. Buyers will also have access to new wheel patterns, such as a 3D-milled design with triangular facets or a retro disc design inspired by the wheels used on a 1920s Rolls-Royce.
Inside, the changes are even more subtle. The steering wheel rim has been slightly thickened, and a new connectivity feature allows owners to connect to their vehicle via the Rolls-Royce Whisper app. This makes it simple to send navigation instructions to the vehicle via smartphone, and owners can also access key vehicle information such as the vehicle’s location, safety status, and maintenance requirements.
The cabin can also be customized in a variety of ways, which Rolls-Royce has highlighted with its own curated special edition known as the Phantom Platino. It has a variety of fabric surfaces, 3D-printed ceramic accents, and, of course, real wood.
No changes to the powertrain have been announced, which makes sense given that the 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V-12 was relatively new compared to the V-12 powering the latest Phantom. The engine produces 563 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, with power sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Rolls-Royce is expected to offer an electric Phantom, but this is unlikely to happen until the company moves closer to its goal of becoming a full-electric brand by 2030. The Specter, Rolls-first Royce’s electric vehicle, will be a massive coupe. It will go on sale next year and will use the same aluminum space-frame platform as all current Rolls-Royces.
