Northrop Grumman and Shield AI Chosen by US Army to Develop Prototype for Future Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System
Angela Johns, Vice President of Autonomous and Tactical Air Systems at Northrop Grumman, stated, “Our team’s enhanced V-BAT embodies over 30 years of experience in designing, delivering, and sustaining advanced unmanned aircraft systems. Coupled with a field-proven platform and production facilities, we bring a unique perspective and capabilities to this critical Army mission.”
Northrop Grumman has partnered with Shield AI, the designer and manufacturer of the V-BAT platform, to provide cutting-edge solutions for an expeditionary vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) UAS. This UAS will offer persistent aerial reconnaissance capabilities for U.S. Army Brigade Combat Teams, Special Forces, and Ranger battalions. As a part of the Future Vertical Lift program, the FTUAS represents the Army’s flagship VTOL unmanned aircraft modernization initiative.
Previous iterations of the V-BAT have been in operation for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps since 2016. The enhanced V-BAT version is user-friendly, possesses increased power, reduced logistical demands, and the ability to carry a variety of interchangeable payloads, such as electro-optical/infrared, synthetic aperture radar, and EW systems. This adaptability and life cycle management ensure its utility over the long term.
