Extraordinarily Rare Identical Triplets Welcomed by Remarkable Mother
Receiving the news of a pregnancy is a cherished and joyous moment. However, finding out that you’re expecting triplets is often a shocking revelation for most mothers. When doctors informed 23-year-old Becki-Jo Allen from Liverpool, England, that she was carrying not one, not two, but three babies, she was left utterly stunned.
The surprises didn’t end there. When Becki-Jo gave birth, she encountered yet another astounding twist—one that no one, not even the doctors, had anticipated. It turned out that her three baby boys were an incredibly rare phenomenon: they were identical triplets. The odds of such an occurrence? One in 200 million.
Four years ago, Becki-Jo Allen and Liam Tierney had exciting news to share with their daughter, Indianna. She was going to become a big sister.
Living just outside of Liverpool, England, the couple had been contemplating expanding their family, though they didn’t know the extent until they saw Becki-Jo’s ultrasound.
Becki-Jo, from Gateacre, Liverpool, who also has a three-year-old daughter named Indianna, had an early scan a few weeks into her pregnancy due to severe headaches and nausea. The bombshell news she received during that scan was that she was expecting triplets.
“It was the biggest shock of my life! We haven’t got any triplets in the family, so it came completely out of the blue,” Becki-Jo told the Liverpool Echo.
The triplets were delivered at 31 weeks. Rocco weighed 3lbs 5oz, Roman weighed 3lbs 6oz, and Rohan weighed 3lbs 10oz.
Being pregnant with triplets often involves significant complications, and it’s rare for all three babies to survive. But fortunately, all three boys recovered and gradually gained weight. After a month and a half in the hospital, the little ones were ready to go home.
They belong to one of only a handful of naturally conceived sets of identical triplets in the UK.
“I was surprised because I expected them to be non-identical. But then I’m normally the only one who can tell them apart, so that does explain a lot!” Becki-Jo mentioned.
Distinguishing features and emerging personalities make it easier for their mother to tell them apart.
“It’s only when they’re asleep that they look the same to me. But they all have completely different personalities. And they’ve all got dark birthmarks between their eyebrows, but Roman’s is slightly darker than the others, and Rohan has a birthmark on his leg as well,” Becki-Jo said.
The process of a single egg splitting into two, and then one of those cells splitting again during the early days of pregnancy, is incredibly rare. For instance, in 2015, only four sets of identical triplets were recorded in the United States.
Although Roman, Rocco, and Rohan look remarkably similar, Becki-Jo can differentiate between them with ease.
“It’s only when they’re asleep that they look the same to me. But they all have completely different personalities. And they’ve all got dark birthmarks between their eyebrows, but Roman’s is slightly darker than the others, and Rohan has a birthmark on his leg as well,” Becki-Jo said.
The triplets go through about 130 diapers per week, along with five packages of wipes. It’s evident that these little guys keep their parents busy.
Ten-year-old Indianna seems delighted with her unique brothers. What a proud big sister!
“Indianna loves them. She’s not one bit jealous. I do feel a bit sorry for her when I think about what it’s going to be like growing up with three little brothers, though!” said Becki-Jo.
These boys are undoubtedly going to attract a lot of attention for a while, and rightly so—they’re an incredibly adorable bunch!
