A 70-year-old woman in India gives birth to her first child
In a remarkable event, an Indian woman has become a first-time mother at the age of 70, choosing to undergo IVF treatment with her husband for the last time, making her one of the oldest first-time mothers in the world.
Jivunben Rabari and her husband, Maldhari, 75, proudly introduced their son, whose name remains undisclosed, to reporters, revealing that he was conceived through IVF.
Rabari, acknowledging her age of 70, joins the ranks of the world’s oldest first-time mothers. However, Erramatti Mangayamma, another Indian woman, holds the record for being the oldest, as she gave birth to twin girls in September 2019 at the age of 74.
Hailing from the small village of Mora in Gujarat, India, Rabari and Maldhari have been married for 45 years and have been unsuccessfully trying to conceive a baby for decades.
Through the assistance of IVF, which can be effective post-menopause, they were finally able to fulfill their desire for a child.
Their doctor, Naresh Bhanushali, expressed astonishment, stating, “This is one of the rarest cases I have ever seen.”
Dr. Bhanushali explained, “When they first approached us, we informed them that conceiving a child at such an advanced age was not feasible, but they insisted. They mentioned that many of their family members had done it as well. This is truly one of the rarest cases I have ever encountered.”
The likelihood of a woman in her 70s conceiving naturally is virtually zero, as most women undergo menopause between their late 40s and early 50s.
However, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) asserts that any woman, regardless of age, can achieve pregnancy with medical assistance as long as she possesses a “normal uterus,” even if she no longer has ovaries.
Medical professionals utilize an egg donated by a much younger woman, which is fertilized outside the body using the male partner’s sperm. Eventually, the embryo is implanted into the woman’s womb, with hopes of a successful pregnancy.
Instances of women in their 60s and 70s giving birth through IVF have occurred in India before.
Mangayamma, at the age of 74, is believed to be the oldest woman in the world to give birth, having welcomed twin girls through IVF. This “medical miracle” took place on September 5, 2019, utilizing a donor’s egg and her husband’s sperm.
Inspired by her 55-year-old neighbor’s successful conception, the pensioner from Andhra Pradesh state embarked on her own journey to have a baby.
